While Abe was away last week I spent most of my time socializing, relaxing, and playing.
Which left me with a giant pile of chores and work to catch up on!

It was actually good to cleanse all at once, since it’s Chinese New Year’s Eve. That’s something you do to “sweep away” any bad luck.
To celebrate The Year of the Rabbit Abe and I met up for a lunch break at the recently opened Bao Dim Sum House. Ate half a melon for breakfast to make plenty of room!

I grew up eating dim sum, and have blogged about some past experiences before. This place is different – you won’t see any pushed carts; it’s swanky and (as my parents would say) “for Americans.”

The prices, even for lunch specials, are steep in comparison to what you would get in any Chinatown…

…but similar to any “authentic” dim sum restaurant, there are very few vegetarian options. Even the eggplant and tofu comes wrapped around seafood!

We ordered the Mixed Vegetable Dumplings

Scallion Pancakes

(Make your own dipping sauce)

And because we were celebrating Chinese New Year, the House Chow Mein (without meat)

Noodles are supposed to symbolize a long life. Unfortunately, Bao’s were cut short.

I filled just a small plate of all the vegetarian stuff…

…left the rest for Abe, since I had two meat filled Zongzi all to myself

One of my favorite foods ever – well-seasoned sticky rice wrapped in bamboo or lotus leaf. I wish they had a vegetarian, sweet red bean one too.
This was really good, though, and less greasy than most versions.

In fact, everything was pretty tasty – I was impressed! All except for the noodle dish, which was mediocre…

…not that that prevented me from finishing off the last couple bites.

It’s hard to find decent Chinese food in Los Angeles, unless you drive to Monterey Park or San Gabriel – and pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to find dim sum in our neighborhood. So even though we were both stuffed, I HAD to order some Dan Ta – it’s been too long since I’ve eaten one!

The egg custards got split evenly. I could’ve used a little more sugar in the filling and crust, but the textures were perfect.

I’ll be back to Bao, though I’m hoping they will wise up to the needs of the neighborhood they’re in, and offer more vegetarian options. Even though the dishes are pricier, the ambiance is pretty, and I don’t have to sit in traffic for an hour to get a quick taste of childhood. I like that they serve dim sum all day long, too – usually it’s just a brunch thing.
Plus, I’ve never spotted celebs at the places I’m used to.

Seth Rogen, ladies and gentlemen! He has such a distinctive laugh – so cool to hear in person

Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio and Justin Timberlake are fans of this place as well?!?
Stayed full forever! Since it was also Groundhog Day, I repeated “breakfast” for “dinner.”

(I ate the other half – just recycled the picture to pay homage to the movie!)

haha i love how you split the egg custard exactly…i totally do that with my bf too
they need to have vegetarian sticky rice wraps. i’d totally devour so many of those, especially the ones with chestnuts. i think my all time favorite dim sum dessert is the durian pastry. definitely not for everybody though.
hope you have a happy Chinese new year, Lynn!
happy new year!! And lol at your groundshog day meal!
Seth Rogan makes me more giddy than Leo…am I weird or what?
and you look so gorgeous slurping your noodle. I always look awful and ungraceful eating because I’m a hot clumsy mess!
Ah!!! Seth Rogan! Super cool
Love him.
WHAT dim sum and seth rogen in one day can i be youuuuuuuu
happy new year’s!
Sounds like an awesome place! I’m still dying to try dim sum. The REAL thing. I’ve probably had something similar in a Chinese restaurant but nothing like that.
those dumplings just look so light, fluffy and delicious! i love how clear the wrappings are
I haven’t had dim sum in a long time. Zongzi are my favorite! Yours look yummy!
Happy New Year!
Love dim sum! I have never been to a place that didn’t have push carts. I’m not sure that I would know what to order. I always choose from the carts based on how it looks. I have no idea what I’m eating.
Maybe it’s better that way. It’s always de-lish no matter what!
I have never been out for dim sum and I think now it would be pretty hard for Tony and I to try it since I would have to go veggie and he can’t have wheat. I love Seth’s laugh too! Sounds like a fun night with your man!
Mmm, looks great. I may need to give it a try next time I’m in LA.
Happy New Year!! I went to Xino at Santa Monica which was similar.
Gong Hay Fat Choy!
I never knew there were dim sum restaurants west of Chinatown. There are actually a few dim sum restaurants in the MPK/SGV area that don’t have pushy carts anymore either.
If you ever come visit Chicago, you should stop by my neck of the woods…. I live just a few blocks from Chinatown and DOZENS of dim sum restaurants
SO cool that you spotted Seth Rogen!!! You know I’m a sucker for celebrity sightings of any kind, and he seems like such a genuinely funny, nice person!
How cool! I actually saw him in LAX right after the Foodbuzz Festival. I love him!
Ahhh dim sum. Looks good. The last time I had proper dim sum was years ago at Empress Pavilion in chinatown, and have been a char siu bao nut ever since… I may have to try that Zongzi soon though. Happy New Year!
Cool celeb spotting!!! I once was camping, and someone in a tent nearby HAD SETH ROGAN’S LAUGH, which was cracking us up the whole weekend.
I’ve been dying to try dim sum for about 2 years now…but I’m allergic to garlic!! which makes it a very precarious endeavor
i have a relative who’s also allergic to garlic, and she finds that eating it with hot peppers combats the allergies?!? she even carries around a small bottle of hot sauce with her.
I love Dim Sum too (we call it Yum Cha in Australia when I go back home to visit – it is usually done on a Sunday brunch time for all the people dealing with their big time hangovers from the night before!)
Cool you saw Seth Rogen too.
arent you sneaky!! haha. did they notice you taking pics at all or were you a super secret paparazzo (slash food blogger).
i wouldnt mind a JT run-in
i was a super sleuth!
