Eating for Show

Yay for the Chipotle deal!!! Abe brought home a burrito for himself, and a free salad for me

I asked for Carnitas, Salsa, Guacamole, and Pinto Beans (not vegetarian, FYI) with Chipotle Honey Vinaigrette

Saved half of it for another meal, and tossed the rest with some of my own mixed greens

Overdressed!!! Wound up having to add another couple handfuls of baby spinach

I probably wouldn’t order this if I was eating AT Chipotle, since it was a bit much for a salad. Next time I’ll go with one of their burritos; that’s what I was actually craving last night, but we were shooting the last few scenes for our short film and I didn’t want anything heavy.

So instead of cookies n ice cream:

We picture wrapped around 10:30!

No more food was consumed but I did do a lot of chopping for the last scene

We felt like we should get milkshakes or something to celebrate, but to be honest I wasn’t feeling it (though I WAS craving one before the shoot). You may have seen the NY Times article “For Actresses, Is a Big Appetite Part of the Show?” and I have to put my two cents in on this. Sometimes the excitement of acting – even when it’s a low-pressure situation like working with my husband – ties my stomach in knots. In the past, I would’ve pushed through that – and ordered something decadent just “for show.” But nowadays, I realize it’s my own body and I can’t be eating for others’ entertainment (despite what it may look like, as someone who publicly catalogs every single meal).

That said, if I had a meeting with Esquire Magazine at a fancy restaurant and they were footing the bill, you’d better believe I’d be taking advantage of their generosity and ordering a crazy amount of food. Well…it would depend on whether or not I had access to a fridge afterwards…but I think it’s unfair to peg ALL actresses’ hearty appetites as “faked.” As I’ve seen from this blog, appetites wax and wane from day to day. If she ate what I ate last night during an interview, they would probably peg her as someone who “just eats salad and fruit for dinner.”

Last night, I had a job to do, and thus, I consciously chose to eat for energy, rather than to satisfy emotions or cravings (as I sometimes will). I think people see what they want to see. We have no control over that, only our decision to not care what others think.

Do you find yourself eating for show?

  1. I don’t ever eat for show. I eat things that I crave and make me feel good. Sometimes I force myself to eat purely for energy, but never for show. I think it’s so much more important to listen to what your body needs than anything else.

  2. This is a really interesting topic. I do hate how every celebrity interview involves a detailed description of what they’re eating, and how they eat it — I’ve especially noticed this in Entertainment Weekly. There’s enough focus on a celebrity’s figure (both male and female) to begin with, and often times the writing about it is almost fetishizing and unseemly. In the end, it just becomes another way to judge a celebrity, and the focus on it means they’re concious of this fact, and it all becomes too through the looking glass for me. I’m much more interested in how Kate Winslet approaches preparing for a role than whether or not she eats a cheeseburger once in a while. Yes, feature pieces need color, but this is such a lazy way to get it.

I also hate that people automatically will assume the worst no matter what the actor is eating: if it’s a cheeseburger, they’re doing it for show. If it’s a salad, they automatically have an eating disorder. All around, it’s a problem.

  3. Hooray for Chipotle! I have a couple coupons from them hanging in my kitchen to be used…

  4. This is really interesting and yes, I have found myself eating for show in my life. When I was too thin, and trying to prove that I ate normally, I’d eat something I wouldn’t normally go for, and sometimes actually felt sick for doing so. That was years ago and now only eat things I crave because we eat for our own happiness and energy. Of course we all go too far sometimes if someone else wants to share dessert, etc. but that is different because we may actually want the taste even though we may be full already.
Oh, and my favorite thing to get at Chipotle, which I find to be pretty good is the salad or burrito bowl with black beans, fajita veggies, two salsas, and lots of guac with a side of the chips to dip in the mix. I never really add the dressing if I get the salad because the guac coats well!

  5. omg I LOVE chipotle’s guac!!! seriously, best stuff EVER. I don’t really eat for show, I just eat what I want and when I want…althought sometimes I eat things I don’t like just so people won’t get worried and think I have a problem or something..not the most fun!

  6. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten for show. No one really cares whether I eat or not, haha. But I can see how it would be an issue.

  7. I eat whatever I want… whether it be healthy or unhealthy. I give my body what it craves, which I think can be rare these days. Speaking of which… your Chipotle photos are making me crave just that… and lucky for me, I have a Chipotle on the first floor of my office building. :)

  8. I don’t mind being one of those “girls who eat salad.” Honestly, salads are often more interesting and appetizing to me than another boring sandwich that mostly consists of too-dry bread, anyway. If I do get sandwiches, I usually eat them open faced and don’t eat all the bread — too dry and boring!!

  9. I think there is a unhealthy interaction going on if a) someone observes and analyzes what the other person eats and b) someone feels they have to defend what they eat or eat for show. If both would be healthy (free of food issue), both of them would not care.

  10. Very interesting post Lynn!
From a different perspective, when I order foods like burgers and fries, I always get a second look from people who know that I’m a Nutritionist…like we know you shouldn’t be eating that…and of course I’ve seen the other side where I get flak for ordering a salad.

  11. I’ve never eaten for show. I will eat a salad when I crave one (rare) and a burger and fries when I crave that too. Manyatimes I’ve been out with my girlfriends and was the only one to order a steak when everyone else ordered their salad. I didn’t judge them and they didn’t judge me, that’s the way eating should be. I knew they enjoy salads and they know I enjoy “anything” teehee. Eat what your body craves, not what you think people think you should be eating. There are days when all I crave is veggies. Learn to listen to your body and I think it will adjust itself. Food is an enemy only if you allow it to be. If you crave something, eat a little bit of it, not a huge serving. No shame in saving some for a meal the next day.

  12. How yummy is Chipotle’s guac??? I think its fabulous. Glad you enjoyed your salad (even if it wasn’t the burrito you were craving!!). And congrats on the wrap! I hope you have a wonderful weekend

  13. Year’s ago, I might eat whether I was hungry or not. I don’t do that now. Bonus of the confidence and security that come with living a few extra years. It’s even rare that I overeat anymore. For me, that overstuffed feeling takes away from enjoying a really great meal. I’d rather take it home.

  14. Nope, never eat for show … I hadn’t heard that actresses did either!

  15. I’m always hungry. No show needed. If you look my direction at any point during the day, I’m most likely stuffing my face with some sort of food item :)

  16. Interesting question. I hadn’t heard of that article but thanks for the link, it was a good read.

I eat alone most of the time. When I’m with family or friends I tend to eat slow with healthy portions. I do this because I feel uncomfortable eating in front of others and believe for some reason that eating slowly is better than shoving food in my mouth as fast as possible. When I eat alone, I definitely eat a little faster and a little more.
