It’s so gorgeous out! I could just read at a cafe all day…

…but unfortunately, there is WAY too much work that needs to get done. So I borrowed my book club pick on Audio instead…

…and listened to it while cleaning the bathroom, doing my hair/makeup, AND tackling my taxes!!!

I actually really loved the first few chapters of “Candy Freak” (as y’all know I’m quite the candy addict myself) but the audio reader has been totally mis-cast. I wish Steve Almond (the author and a fellow Wesleyan grad) had read it himself. He has such a subtle, witty sarcasm to his writing (think Dave Eggers) that the smooth, bubblegum voice they chose comes off as cheesy.

It’s distracting. I guess they were going for a Marc Summers type, to remind you of “Unwrapped?”

I’ve got an afternoon callback! Time to change and let my hair down…

Thoughts on audio books?

  1. I listened to a lot of audio books while commuting from LA to Anaheim my first year at Disneyland. My absolute favorite was The Secret Life of Bees, read by actress Jenna Lamia. A fantastic voice performance that completely brought the story to life. Worst has to be anything read by Malcolm Gladwell – snooze…

  2. If they miscast an audio book it really does kill if for me. I love the way David Sedaris reads his books on the audio versions. You can really feel the words.

  3. What a delicious-looking snack!

  4. i love audiobooks! makes the 1+ drive home much more pleasant. however, a poorly chosen voice can really ruin the book! i’ve definitely “read” some hits and some misses.

  5. Ooh I think I”ll check out that book! Thanks for the rec! I’m a candy freak too!
Don’t tell anyone, but I’d take a bag of jolly ranchers or those gummy orange slices with sugar on them over any of my desserts, any day! Shhhh! :)

  6. Love being read to or liistening to audio books….so relaxing…

  7. I just can’t get used to them. There’s something comforting about holding a book in my hands and flipping those pages.

  8. hope the call back was a great success. I use audio books for long car trips, but I haven’t been for a while.

  9. never really listened to an audio book, always wanted to give it a try! and we still need to start tackling our taxes! you are one step ahead of us! :)

  10. I like audiobooks for the car, but I don’t think of them for cleaning, etc. Good idea!

Good luck on the callback. :)
