Baking Klutz

Just when I think I’ve got this baking thing figured out something like THIS happens…

…. and I’ll throw my hands up to the Dessert Gods, screaming “WHY ME?!?”

WHO manages to screw up a pre-measured-step-by-step-ready-made-FOOL-PROOF thing like this?!?

Just call me “The Baking Klutz!” (Here are some other examples of past failures adventures.)

Was it because I improvised with almond milk and a flax egg?

Or was it the marshmallows? (Nope. I just googled marshmallow + cookie and was taunted presented with stunning results.)

I think my issue was neglecting the nonstick spray, which I must point out – I didn’t use with my Figgy Pudding Cookies!!! Let’s pause for a moment and acknowledge the success of that one…

…okay, did I mention my smoke alarm went off 3x? I hate you, baking.

Managed to salvage most of the ones on the silicone mat (about a dozen), though they were still a rather crumbly, sticky mess

These wax paper guys were hopeless…

…just hopeless!!!

I peeled off most of the paper (though you can still see some in this picture) and cobbled together a sad little container of crumbles.

Little late afternoon snack…

…REALLY small – that Kishu was teeny:

Thankfully, the cookies were crazy delicious.

These were brought to my book club, and a few other survivors I’m giving to my commercial reps…

…more on last night later – gotta get ready for that agent meeting now!

  1. That is how I feel 98% of the time when I bake! :) So I rarely do it!!

  2. ha! oh man, youre really hopeless when it comes to baking…but at least they tasted delicious. sadly im not a savvy enough baker myself to figure out what the problem was. but now im thinking of all the ways to make marshmallow cookies!!!

  3. lynn, you are supposed to use parchment paper, not wax! lol i’m glad some cookies were still saved.

  4. If you use parchment paper they won’t stick. Wax paper isn’t made for baking on… The wax melts and sticks to everything and can even transfer toxins!

  5. non stick spray is my friend. Glad the taste was spot on : ) they almost look like deconstructed rice krispie treats thanks to the marshmellows.

  6. Agree with Becki! Parchment paper is amazing. Everything turns out perfectly crispy on the bottom. Ditch that wax paper!

  7. baking is fun!! well,… at least easier than roasting chicken ;) ! u’ve had so many successes. this one is extra special – a gift from God (not to u, but to us as readers of your blog!). anyway, there are a few reasons why cookies stick to wax paper: waited too long before removing cookies from paper, low-fat ingredients and perhaps too much sugar/glucose. i have a feeling that the sugar-paper combo triggered smoke alarm too.

  8. I definitely would have still eaten those cookies!

  9. I am always baking for other people, just because I love it. I can’t figure out what went wrong at your attempt to bake..I think you were just unlucky :P A couple of weeks ago I failed as well..my whole oven looked like a war just took place in it. It took me a hour to clean it up. And that happened to someone who baked more than once. So I think you did pretty well? I’m sorry if my English isn’t perfect btw :) I’m from the Netherlands..

  10. everyone has had their share of failures in the kitchen!

  11. I think everyone has covered the wax paper issue. Eggs act as a binder and no substitutes will ever work as well. So anytime you do, they will be more crumbly. Not a failure just a side effect. Eggless baking can also cause breadlike creations to go stale a little faster.

Why do you substitute the eggs?

  13. What is the point of waxed paper anyways? So annoying. I have two rolls of it that I purchased by mistake (thought I picked up parchment) over two years ago that are just sitting in a drawer, taking up room. Onwards and Upwards, my dear!
